Case Study

Name of Principal:

Corinne Coyle

Name of School:

St. Mary’s P.S. Draperstown

Area:

We appointed a new co-ordinator for Play.  This became an area for review in our School Development Plan.  We wanted to revise our planning and evaluations and be refreshed with some new ideas for good practice in this area.  We were keen to work closely with our local schools to share good practice.

Focus:

“Joan worked with our local cluster group to define and share good practice in play at Foundation Stage and Key Stage One.  We shared planning templates and looked at examples of good practice in planning.  We shared practice in different areas of play and Joan shared some ideas of good practice from other schools.”

Focus:

“A number of newly appointed co-ordinators. We wanted to clearly define roles and responsibilities from the outset and define good practice. Our middle management team took part in Joan’s Aspiring Leaders’ Course. This helped them to clearly define their roles and outline expectations in relation to good practice.”

Impact:

“We have revised our planning and feel it is more relevant and effective. Our F.S. teachers were enthused to attend further training on good practice in play facilitated by Stanmillis College. Joan’s training was the catalyst to energize staff to continue to improve practice in this area.”

Impact:

“Co-ordinators have a clear idea of the responsibilities of their demanding role. They understand what good practice looks like. In particular they have improved practice in evaluating the on-going work of their action throughout the year”
